On October 13, 1983, Mushtaq Ahmed Bhat alias Mushtaq-ul-Islam of Batamaloo, Srinagar was arrested by the police at cricket stadium in Srinagar for allegedly trying to dig the pitch during one day international match between India and West Indies.
Since cricket stadium there is no end to the arrests for this detained Hurriyet leader, Mushtaq-Ul-Islam. He is also founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League. In last week of April 2013 after court orders release he was again booked under draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) for the ninth time since 2008 and was shifted to Udhampur district jail from Srinagar Central jail.
After his arrest in 1983, Mushtaq was detained for a year and lodged in Hiranagar jail in Jammu and again in 1987 he was against arrested for a year. In 1990, Mushtaq-ul-Islam alias Guga sahib was arrested by the Indian troops during a crackdown operation as chief of Hizbullah and was released after 14 years in 2004.
During the mass agitation against the transfer of Kashmiris land to non-Kashmiris in 2008, Mustaq was again detained and was released after three years in 2011.
His stay outside jail was short lived as he was re-arrested by the authorities only after three days when he was attempting to address a press conference in a local hotel in Srinagar. The district magistrate Srinagar in his latest detention order said Mushtaq delivered a speech against the death penalty of Mohammad Afzal Guru. And subsequently Mushtaq was detained. The grounds of detention order among other things describe Mushtaq as an active liberation leader …..” The supporters of the detained leader while demanding his release said that Mushtaq-ul-Islam is being victimized by the Indian establishment and puppet regime for his political views.
