Indian troops misbehave; attempt to molest Kashmiri women in Poonch

Srinagar, June 3, 2012:  Four Indian troopers of 25 Rashtriya Rifles barged into the house of one villager and started clicking photographs of women and girls present inside the house. They also misbehaved, abused and attempted to disgrace them in Panchayat Dungan (Barashari) of tehsil Mandi in Pooch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The names of the victims were Shahnaz Akhter, Zaitoon Beguim and Parveen Akhter.

No FIR was registered by police against the troops of the incident. The troops who were involved in the incident were firstly arrested by police and  later they were set free.

Hundreds of villagers staged a massive to protest and staged a massive sit-in near Mandir Chowk of tehsil Mandi for more than two hours. The protesters were shouting slogans against the Indian army and demanding strict action against the personnel who had misbehaved with the women. The Mufti Mohammad Saeed;s Peoples Democratic Party district organizing secretary Riaz Aatish informed media men that four soldiers of 25 Rashtriya Rifles on 3 June 2012 Sunday morning barged into a house and misbehaved with the inmates, including women. “Today morning (3 June 2012) four soldiers barged into the house of one villager and started clicking photographs of women and girls present inside the house. They also misbehaved and abused them, which angered the villagers” he said, adding that hundreds of villagers took to streets against the misconduct of army personnel. Locals also came inside the police station and demanded filing of a case against the Indian army soldiers. They said that the Indian troops and other personnel are time and again harassing the villagers on the name of security check.

When contacted, Sub Inspector Abdul Rehman, who is investigating the matter,  said that police have brought all the four troopers to police station. “We have also informed the Commanding Officer of 25- Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the villagers” he claimed.
