Inmates beaten inside Baramulla jail: Kashmir Bar

Srinagar, October 9,2011: In Srinagar, the Bar Association has said that the inmates at the Baramulla Jail on September 27 were mercilessly beaten by the jail authorities and paramilitary forces after the inmates went on a hunger strike against the inhumane treatment meted out to them.

A spokesperson of the Bar Association said, a dozen prisoners/detunes suffered injuries due to the beating. “Instead of taking them for treatment, they have been made to remain confined to their barracks and not are allowed to meet any one,” he said.

The Bar spokesperson said the detunes had had gone on hunger strike a few days back against the inhuman treatment meted out to them, non-production in the courts on the dates of their hearing and non-availability of medical facilities available in the jail.

The Bar, while condemning the barbaric act particularly that of the Jail Superintendent and his subordinates including CRPF and ITBPF personnel, has decided to file legal proceedings against the accused in the court

The Bar has requested International Red Cross to visit the jail immediately and provide necessary medical assistance to detunes/ under trials who have been beaten by the jail staff. The Bar has also requested international human rights agencies to take notice of the ‘gruesome act’ of beating the prisoners in the jails and impress upon the jail authorities and others to observe international law.
